Roger Federer was five-time defending and was looking for a record breaking sixth consecutive Wimbledon title. Rafael Nadal was playing his third Wimbledon final in as many years and was the favourite coming into this match off a French open victory in May against Federer. Over 7 hours after the match was due to start, 4 hours and 48 minutes of tennis, two rain delays and the best tie-breaker ever seen, Nadal fell to the ground in near darkness.
